national team began on August 17, 2005, with a match against Hungary, during which he was sent off within two minutes for elbowing an opponent. He participated in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but coach Jose Pekerman was cautious about giving him free rein, and he started only one match. Barcelona initially did not allow Messi to play in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but an agreement was eventually reached, and he went on to assist his country in winning the gold medal.
